2020, a Year in Review

Year in Review, 2020

Like every organisation, not only in the UK but globally, we were unsure how the review of our 2020 would look. January was filled with high expectations and all became uncertain come March, with isolation, lockdowns and home working introduced across the country, we had little idea how the year would develop for us in atal. For us, any sign of slowing down was thankfully limited to a month, as construction sites across the UK continued working in adapted environments. Now at the end of 2020 and able to reflect on the past year, we’re incredibly encouraged to have not only survived, but as a company we’ve been able to thrive. One of the greatest news stories for us came in the summer months with the confirmation of the BBA Cert for our Type B System Betocrete. We’ve seen a great deal of interest in its unique 2-in-1 hydrophobic and hydrophobic characteristics and we’re looking forward to this continuing in the new year.

We’ve maintained a vision to design, supply for, install and warranty projects, the foundations of our service, to ensure peace of mind for all of our clients. We found that the industry has continued no matter the trials faced, so we’d like to congratulate all of those within the sector, who stayed safe with a positive desire to continue moving forward. So we’re now happy to review 4 selected projects from our 2020 portfolio.

Leisure Centre Development:

Somerset, South West

Type A and B Combined Structural Waterproofing and Ground Gas Protection System

Project Requirements:

Atal were required to provide ground gas protection to all elements and waterproofing plus ground gas protection to the retaining wall. (The swimming pool waterproofing package was complete by others.)

Solution/Result:

The Waterproofing specification achieved a grade 3 environment when coupled with the ventilation strategy by the specialist. In order to comply with the relevant british standards we introduced the following measures. The use of combined protection, a fully bonded waterproofing barrier system, a concrete waterproofing admixture and the use of a maintainable land drain at the retaining walls.

System:

Atal Bentofix 5300 System

Atal Betocrete WP360 System

Hotel Development:

Cardiff, South Wales

Type A and B Combined Structural Waterproofing Solution.

Project Requirements:

Atal were required to deliver a waterproofing specification to provide a Grade 3 environment in the single-story basement of a large hotel development where assumed risk level is ‘worst case scenario’ as per BS8102:2009, as the water table is at ground level.

Solution/Result:

The Waterproofing specification achieved a grade 3 environment. We introduced the following measures as the provided solution; Combined protection, a fully bonded waterproofing barrier system and use of a concrete waterproofing admixture. The proposal involved combined protection provided using a Type A, Atal Bentofix 5000 plus ancillaries, and Type B system, Atal Betocrete WP360 with ancillaries.

Leisure Centre Development:

Derby, Midlands

Type B waterproofing solution.

Project Requirements:

To provide Grade 3 waterproofing protection for the Derby pool and water park development.

Solution/Result:

atal specified the use of a full atal Type B, Betocrete system to the walls and floors of the basement and swimming pools. The Waterproofing specification achieved a grade 3 environment with a fully comprehensive system with evidence of competent installation, preventing any water ingress and allowing the works to be warranted. atal specified the use of atal Betocrete system to the walls and floors of the basement and swimming pools.

atal were engaged early in the design stage to propose a waterproofing and ground gas protection specification complying with BS8485:2015. Through liaising with specialist consultants the results of the borehole logs were reinterpreted and the ground gas protection requirement removed resulting in a cost effective, simple and more sustainable approach.  atal specified the use of atal Betocrete WP-360 admixture to the walls and floors of the basement and swimming pools.  atal assisted with the pour schedule and mix design.  The admix was delivered to the ready-mix concrete plant for the concrete in pre weighed water soluble bags. Throughout the build, our technical team inspected and reported on the quality of the concrete ensuring any defects were adequately repaired and the designed crack width was not exceeded.

University development:

Bath, The Southwest

Type A waterproofing solution.

Project Requirements:

To provide Grade 3 waterproofing and ground gas protection for Bath School of Management, Bath University.Type C complete by a different company.

Solution/Result:

The Waterproofing specification achieved a grade 3 environment. Structural waterproofing and ground gas protection was provided using atal Bentofix 5300 installed to the back of the retaining wall and below the slab, in conjunction with atal 109LM. Waterproofing protection was provided at the wall floor junction using atal Bentostrip waterbar through the kicker joint of the retaining wall. atal Flo Board 4e was installed behind the retaining wall, allowing the contractor to backfill with ‘as dug’ material. The installation of atal Flo Board 4e resulting in cost savings along with improving the green credentials of the project.  A maintainable drain was installed at the bottom of the retaining wall to ensure hydrostatic pressure doesn’t build.
