Atal and technical partner Naue supply Bentofix® BFG 5000 Thermal Lock geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs), also known as geosynthetic clay barriers (GBR-C). The membrane consists of needle-punched, reinforced composites that combine two outer layers of durable geotextile and a uniform core of high-swelling powder sodium bentonite clay. It is manufactured under ISO 9001 regulations and is BBA certified.
BENTOFIX® BFG 5000 is a waterproofing barrier system which efficiently protects reinforced concrete structures, preventing the penetration of water and providing protection to the structure from attack by aggressive chemical substances present in the local surrounding soil.
Atal Structural Waterproofing and Ground Gas Protection solutions in partnership with the Bentofix® range of products are suitable for almost any project where there is a need to contain or protect against water, ground gas or dampness including retaining walls, basements and water retaining structures specified as requiring Type A (Barrier) technology.
Strong and durable nonwoven geotextiles encapsulate and protect the layer of sodium bentonite powder, ensuring its long-term performance. Since Bentofix® BFG 5000 contains the highest quality sodium bentonite available, an immediate swelling following installation is ensured to safely self-seal any unexpected mechanical damages.
The Bentofix® range of products includes everything required for reliable and long-lasting waterproofing solutions for below ground and water retaining structures, with a choice of membrane, mortars and ancillary products.
We pride ourselves on our high level of service, ensuring clear communication, responsibility for the design and bespoke CAD details.
During installation, we provide comprehensive onsite training where required and undertake regular site inspections to ensure that all materials are installed according to the specification details, industry best practice and data sheets; eliminating the ever-present risk of a substandard installation.
We also provide reports on installations upon request.
ALL GCL’S ARE NOT THE SAME JUST BECAUSE THEY USE SODIUM BENTONITE!
Because GCLs made with powdered bentonite can create a higher pressure within the geotextiles when they hydrate, they have an improved self-healing effect. (The increased pressure is because of the higher bulk density, with less space between the geotextiles.)
Small bentonite powder particles mean small spaces between the particles, therefore only a little water is needed to swell the first layer of the powder which slows down the movement of water into the remainder of the powder layer.
This means that powder-based systems give;
- Instant sealing
- They can be installed in the rain if required.
With granules, the pores (the spaces between the granules) are bigger, and water can move into the whole bentonite thickness causing the entire thickness to start swelling. The moisture content can quickly get past the 50% level, where this swelling can weaken the internal shear strength. Such semi swollen GCLs are more prone to the footprint effect.
Bentofix® consists of an evenly distributed layer of high-swelling sodium bentonite powder encapsulated between two geotextile components that act as the sealing element. The main advantage of the powder bentonite is its uniform distribution and its immediate sealing performance. When hydrated and permeated under confinement with fresh water the bentonite layer swells and forms a gel-like low permeable barrier. Over a range of confining stresses, Bentofix® GCLs provide an excellent hydraulic performance even under high hydraulic gradient conditions.
Bentofix BFG is presently the only standard GCL, world-wide, which has two layers of powdered bentonite!
The Unique Advantages of Needle-Punched Bentofix BFG range.
Self-Sealing Overlap Joints
The unique Bentofix BFG 5000 GCL is manufactured with additional bentonite powder impregnated into the top geotextile covering the complete roll area.
There is no requirement for any extra bentonite to be placed in any overlap area on site installations due to the unique increased bentonite to bentonite jointing integrity.
Powder not Granules
Bentofix BFG 5000 has 5000g/m2 of bentonite powder spread over the whole area of the product to create self-sealing overlaps everywhere and to stop tracking.
Thermal Lock Technology
Bentofix is the only system available with thermal lock technology which permanently locks the needle-punched fibres of the nonwoven geotextile layer with the Bentofix carrier layer of GCL-types without PE coating and improves the hydraulic conductivity performance at low confining stresses.
This process significantly increases the pullout resistance of the fibres – a durability enhancing measure that ensures immediate fibre-strength during hydration.
All Weather Installation
When hydrated the sodium bentonite swells, it expands by over 16 times its dry volume. As the membrane is needle punched and thermally locked, the sodium bentonite is contained, preventing free swell. This means it can be installed in all weather conditions.
The material can be post or pre-applied and is installed without the need for primer and protection board.
