Structural waterproofing is the act of waterproofing a structure at or below ground level, using one or more waterproofing systems of Type A, Type B or Type C.

Type A protection systems are defined by BS 8102:2022 as “barrier protection”. This is where a membrane is put in place which offers a barrier to the passage of water between the internal and external environments of the structure.
Type B structurally integral waterproofing, as defined by BS 8102:2022 (Code of Practice for protection of below ground structures against water ingress), is where the structure itself is constructed as an integral water-resistant shell.
Type C systems use internal groundwater management, utilising a cavity between the external skin and internal finish in structures. Groundwater is lead to an appropriate sump-pump system or drainage outlet with a non-return valve.
Our design philosophy is the selection of technically appropriate, value-driven structural waterproofing systems to match the needs of the client’s design, as well as the correct detailing of the designed solution to achieve a durable, watertight sub-structure.
Grade 1A: Lower grade car parks. Some seepage and damp areas are tolerable. Local drainage might be necessary to deal with seepage.
Grade 1B: Car parks. No seepage but damp areas from internal and external sources is acceptable, dependent on intended use. Local drainage might be necessary to deal with seepage.
Grade 2: Plant rooms and workshops (requiring a drier environment than Grade 1); storage areas, lift pits. No water penetration acceptable, damp areas as a result of internal air moisture/condensation is tolerable; ventilation might be required.
Grade 3: Ventilated residential and commercial areas, including offices, restaurants etc; leisure centres. No water penetration acceptable, ventilation, dehumidification or air conditioning necessary, appropriate to the intended use.
Where there is doubt about the use of the room, Grade 3 protection should be provided.
