Type A protection is defined by BS 8102:2022 as “barrier protection”. This is where a waterproof membrane is put in place offering a barrier to the passage of water between the internal and external environments.
Type B structurally integral waterproofing, as defined by Code Of Practice BS 8102:2022 (Protection of below ground structures against water ingress), is where the structure itself is constructed as an integral water-resistant shell.
Type C systems use internal groundwater management, utilising a cavity between the internal face of the external wall in structures. Groundwater is lead to an appropriate sump-pump system or drainage outlet with a non-return valve.
